The Sugar Express * Destination - Gum Disease

by: EmeryC

Some interesting facts about sugar :

* World consumption per person per year is over 140 million tons.
* Individual consumption per person per year is over 142 pounds.
This does not included the natural sugars in vegetables and fruits that we eat. Although we need sugar to maintain our body health, it can certainly cause health issues if we over indulge.

( I should have became a dentist )

So what does this have to do with gum disease ?

We have over 20 identifiable bacteria germs in our mouth. There are good bacteria which protects our oral health and we have destructive bacteria, which if left unchecked will almost certainly result in gum disease.

There is a constant war going on inside our mouth. Our oral health depends upon which is the victor. Bacteria thrives in a dry environment so avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol.
Alcohol will kill the germs for a couple of hours, however, by doing so will dry out the mouth and give the bacteria an excellent environment to breed again.

Chewing on sugarless gum or candy will keep the saliva flowing and will keep the mouth moist to prevent a dry environment for breeding bacteria. Those with  dry mouth syndrome  should take extra precaution to keep their mouth moist.

This may sound contradictory, however, sugar will cause saliva to turn acidic, coating your teeth and slowly wearing down the tooth enamel.
The bacteria that feeds off of sugar produces toxins which breaks down the gum tissue.

Sugar also produces an enzyme which in turn produces dextran, which is a sticky substance that builds up as plaque causing the tooth enamel to soften. We all have seen what damage a worm in an apple can do to the fruit. Basically, this is what happens to tooth enamel.

Once bacteria forms within the gum pockets, gum infection occurs and gingivitis takes over which can cause bleeding gums, swollen gums and acute gum disease. Bacteria that breeds within the gum pocket will slowly eat away at the gum tissue resulting in gum recession.

As the bacteria destroys the gum tissue, it continues down into the bone structure causing bone loss which makes the gums recede further.

Refined sugar is much harder for the body to digest than natural sugars called fructose which is found in fruits and vegetables. Since raw sugar takes time to digest, the excess is absorbed in the body tissues which can account for more body weight.

Sugar does not cause cavities, it's the bacteria feeding on sugar that will destroy tooth enamel.
Remember, it takes less than one hour after eating that destructive bacteria begins to form. It's important to use a dental care product to eliminate bacteria between brushing.

We all need a certain amount of sugar to maintain our health, however, bacteria has a sweet tooth also.

Want to Keep Your Immune System Healthy Keep Your Teeth Clean

by: P., Piero D.D.S.

Respiratory infections can be caught at any time of the year. The standard advice for the prevention of these sicknesses is to wash your hands and keep your immune system healthy by eating properly and exercising regularly. Washing your hands is one way of keeping the hundreds of different bacteria and viruses from getting into your system. Individuals with lower immune systems are more susceptible to infections, since your immune system helps to defend the body, if and when a virus slips in.

In addition to the standard advice, a less publicized approach to healthy living and avoiding a respiratory infection is to keep your teeth clean. Here's why:
1. There are 400-500 species of bacteria that live in your mouth. Viruses can use bacteria as "factories" to grow and multiply. If a virus makes its way into your mouth (usually from touching your hands to your mouth or biting your nails), the fewer bacteria in your mouth, the less likely the virus will grow.
2. Periodontal disease is caused by plaque producing bacteria. The body in defense of the periodontal disease releases cytokines. These cytokines trigger your blood-making organs to constantly fight or defend themselves, thus weakening the body's immune system to fight other infections.
3. Periodontal disease is a potential contributing factor for respiratory diseases, according to the American Academy of Periodontology.

The bacteria that cause periodontal disease and are taxing your immune system are breeding right now in the perfect environment of your mouth. They love the cozy, moist, dark, warm and acidic ecosystem, which is constantly being fed by carbohydrates. The areas between the teeth are particularly good breeding grounds because the damaging bacteria thrive in the absence of oxygen. The bacteria grow rapidly - actually doubling their count every hour. There are more bacteria in your mouth than people on the planet Earth. The excrement or bi-product of the bacteria is what forms the sticky film that is a constant challenge to remove and what is called plaque.

Symptoms of periodontal infection are often not noticeable until the disease is advanced. Some of the symptoms include: bad breath that will not go away, red or swollen gums, tender or bleeding gums, loose teeth, or sensitive teeth. A dentist can diagnose the disease in the early stages, prior to individuals realizing they have it. Because 85% of the population have some degree of periodontal disease, it is extremely important to get regular dental check ups. Professional cleanings at a dental office are recommended every six months. Periodontal disease is the most widespread disease on earth.

Visiting a dentist is only one half of the prevention equation. Daily home care is as important. Periodontal disease is prevented by thoroughly cleaning your teeth, requiring the removal of the resilient bacteria. A toothbrush does a good job in removing the bacteria from the high spots, but unfortunately, not in between teeth. In addition, most conscientious individuals who try to do a better job at cleaning their teeth, end up with toothbrush abrasion. This ridge between the tooth and gum line expose the root. The area then is sensitive to hot, cold, sweets and acids, and requires composites that must be repeatedly replaced.

Flossing is important both in the prevention and the control of periodontal disease according to the American Dental Association (ADA). Because it is a laborious task to floss, most people don't. The ADA reported that only about 5% of the population actually flosses. In addition, only 18 - 35% of the plaque between teeth is removed when one does floss, according to The Journal of Clinical Periodontology. Flossing can also move the contagious periodontal disease from an infected site to an uninfected site. Although oral irrigators are meant to replace flossing, they can't cut through plaque's sticky biofilm since they only use water.

Once afflicted, patients with periodontal disease control it by a disciplined and meticulous oral cleaning regimen, both at the dental office and at home. Professional treatment may require below the gum line scraping, three-month check ups instead of the traditional six-month, and a prescription oral rinse.

Oral health is critical to total health. There is evidence that point to a link between periodontal disease and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), among which is emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Sixteen million Americans suffer from COPD and it is the 6th leading cause of mortality in the US. Studies published in the Journal of Periodontology found that patients with periodontal disease have a 1.5x greater risk of COPD.

The American Academy of Periodontology reported that, Bacteria that grow in the oral cavity can be aspirated into the lung to cause respiratory diseases such as pneumonia, especially in people with periodontal disease. The bacteria that are multiplying in the mouth are not only being used as factories for the viruses but are also being breathed into the susceptible lungs.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services suggests that there are over 1 billion respiratory infections each year in the US. Avoid illness - wash your hands, keep them out of your mouth, eat healthy, exercise AND clean your teeth.

Top Ten Techniques For Rapid Teeth Whitening Success

by: Clark Blaise

When you smile, one of the first things people notice about your face is your teeth, and more specifically how white they are. Dental science has provided us with a lot of ways to get the same smile that supermodels and movie stars enjoy, but for a lot less money. Here are the top ten ways to take advantage of that knowledge, that provide the most whitening in the least amount of time.

1) Cut Dark Drinks

The enamel in your teeth is porous, and therefore subject to being stained by the things that you imbibe. Teas, dark sodas and things of that nature can slowly darken your teeth over time, even if you have excellent dental care habits.

2) Too Much Fluoride

Fluoride is a chemical that bonds to the surface of your teeth, and can act as a protecting agent against decay. Many people in the United States receive fluoride treatments as children, but too much of it in your dental care regimen or products can cause discoloration.

3) Use an Electric Toothbrush

Its simple physics, the human hand can only deliver so many brush strokes over the course of the two minutes that the average person spends brushing their teeth each morning. Electric toothbrushes can deliver thousands more brushstrokes, and can lead to a much better cleaning. Teeth whitening is the natural outcome of clean teeth.

4) Professional Treatments

Obviously, any modern and well-equipped dentist's office will have the tools and know-how to whiten your teeth more brightly than anything you could do on your own. They can do it quickly, to boot, but the problem is that it can cost you an arm and a leg. You have to ask yourself what white teeth are worth to you.

5) Home Bleaching

A lot of companies sell home bleaching kits that involve treating your teeth in a relatively caustic substance overnight. While many of these systems are affordable and effective, you have to take care to follow the directions to the letter, or there could be some adverse consequences.

6) Water Rinse

Most people brush their teeth before bed, but then follow it up with a late-night snack before actually hitting the hay. It doesn't occur to them that whatever they eat or drink will stick to their teeth all night. Let the last thing you do before you actually go to sleep be washing your mouth out with cool, clean tap water.

7) Chew More Gum

Chewing gum can do more for your mouth than just giving you fresh breath. Gum is fairly indestructible, and acts as a mildly abrasive surface. Most people chew gum with their molars, and doing so can really help to clean up hard-to-reach spots on those back teeth.

8) Eat More Hard Fruit

You've heard the old adage about an apple a day keeping the doctor away. Hard fruit that takes a little effort to bite into can take care of removing old plaque that regular brushing can miss. Think of eating apples as a way of scrubbing your teeth very hard. It wont be wrong if we call them natures teeth whitening products.

9) Brush More Often

Most dentists recommend brushing a minimum of twice a day, but some say that brushing even more often is more optimal if you're actually trying to whiten your teeth. If you eat three meals a day, then you should be brushing your teeth three times a day. Good results will follow.

10) Avoid Gummy Candy

Anything that contains sugar and will have a tendency to get stuck in the crevices between your teeth is going to hinder your teeth whitening efforts. If you do give into the temptation, a thorough brushing should follow shortly thereafter.
With the flood of teeth whitening products in the market, it is advised to seek professional guidance and look for the reviews before choosing the one for you.

The milk factor in healthy teeth

by: Anonymous

All parents want their children to have beautiful smiles... showing off healthy teeth. It's a sense of achievement to know they have raised healthy and happy children. And good dental health means looking after your teeth to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
MOST parents are aware that one of the ways to keep teeth healthy is by brushing regularly but what many are not aware of is the important role diet can play in good dental health. As the saying goes "we are what we eat".
Adequate nutrition, particularly during the early years, is important for tooth development, eruption and maintenance, as well as for salivary gland function.
Many mothers are not aware that most of a child's teeth are already formed by the time the baby is born. So it is essential for pregnant mothers to get enough of the required nutrients, especially calcium. This can be obtained from drinking milk or taking calcium supplements.
Young children also need lots of calcium to support the continuing growth of their jawbones and permanent teeth. How is calcium contributing to strong teeth? First, as the teeth form and mineralise, they need adequate calcium and phosphorus to form a hard structure. This takes place over a long period of time. Having an adequate amount of calcium and phosphorus during growth is critical for healthy teeth.
Recent research indicates that mothers' food choices, by influencing their children's dietary habits, impact the eruption of primary teeth during the first three years of life and future development of dental caries.
Second, calcium makes jawbones strong and healthy too. Jawbones need to be strong as they hold the teeth in place. There is no denying that milk is a good source of calcium and this is why milk plays an important role in building healthy teeth.
Other than calcium and phosphorus, milk also contains vitamins A and D. vitamin A is important for maintaining the mucous membranes of the mouth and Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption for healthy bones, teeth and growth of the jaws.
Choosing the right food for children helps strengthen their teeth but giving the wrong food too often will affect their dental health. Most parents can easily relate sugary foods to tooth decay. The decay process begins when the bacteria in the mouth breaks down components of saliva. These components adhere to tooth enamel. This is the start of dental plaque.
Dental plaque is a clear, gelatinous material that allows bacteria to remain on the teeth. If dental plaque is not removed frequently (at least once a day) by proper brushing and flossing, the plaque becomes tightly attached to the tooth and only mechanical cleaning can remove it.
This is why frequent visits to a dentist and regular, thorough cleaning by a dental hygienist is very important. Inside this dental plaque, the bacteria ferment dietary carbohydrates for a food source. This fermentation produces lactic and other acids. These acids demineralise the tooth enamel.
As the tooth demineralises, bacteria move into the tooth, decay begins and a cavity is formed. Therefore, to reduce the risk of tooth decay, it is important to minimise sweet and sticky foods and drinks..

Safe But Effective Teeth Whitening

by: Jon Rhodes

It must be remembered that teeth are never naturally completely white. They are usually a light yellow that tend to darken with age. This is because the surface enamel cracks and erodes, which exposes the dentine. The dentine is more porous and absorbs more food colours and pigmentation. The stains can then grip onto plaque, causing a build-up of tartar on the teeth.

The internet is packed with advice about how to have whiter teeth. Much of this advice is to be avoided, or at least given careful consideration, as most of them can cause damage to the teeth in the long term. Here's a quick run through on some of the most common pieces of advice.

One of the most common forms of advice is to rinse the mouth with hydrogen peroxide every day. Please do not do this. Whilst you may see some positive results, Hydrogen peroxide has been found to cause tissue hyperplasias, which are precancerous tissue changes, if used for more than 5 days.

Lemon juice is a natural bleach and whitener, and a very good general purpose stain-remover. However it should never be used on teeth as the high Vitamin C content will strip the teeth of calcium and damage it faster than anything else. In fact avoid using any acids, even it is from relatively harmless ingredients such as strawberry's or other fruit. You do not know what quantity of acid you are applying, so it is difficult to calculate a safe level of usage. If you must use these methods, then rinse the mouth thoroughly with water, then brush with a fluoride toothpaste about 20 minutes later, when the enamel has hardened.

Brushing with salt and baking soda is also commonly recommended. You may indeed see some whitening results, but the prolonged scrubbing of your teeth will eventually wear down the enamel, causing far greater problems than simple staining. If you do decide to go down this route, then limit its use to about once every two weeks.

There are some effective and far safer methods to get those white teeth you dream of. Here's a run down of some top tips.

Avoid, or a least reduce the consumption of coffee, tea, cola, red wine, tobacco  anything that stains.

If possible, try to brush your teeth after every meal. - Ideally with an electric toothbrush. These can remove 98.2 percent of plaque, which holds stains. Mouth washes with antibacterial action and plaque dissolvers also help in the prevention of stains. Remember to be careful of brushing too hard as it will strip off the surface enamel, exposing the darker dentine, which is also more vulnerable to staining.

If brushing your teeth after every meal is impractical, which it is sure to be at times, then try chewing gum. Chewing gum has two beneficial actions helps to clean the teeth in a by removing the debris, and it also stimulates the production of saliva. (Drinking plenty of water also helps improve the function of the salivary glands.)

This is important as saliva has the ability to neutralise acid and remineralise the enamel, strengthening the teeth. Less damage to our enamel means fewer discolourations. Gum that contains Sorbitol has a therapeutic anti-bacterial action which helps kill decay-causing bacteria. However even gum with sugar is beneficial as the sugar quickly dissolves making it effectively into a sugar-free gum after a few minutes.
Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after every meal, if brushing or chewing gum is not an option. This is especially important if you do consume drinks that stain. The water will wash away and dilute the damage. If you can't get to a bathroom sink, swill some water around your mouth and swallow.

Try to eat more crunchy fruits and vegetables such as apples carrots, celery, radishes, and peppers. Your teeth will benefit from the gentle rubbing actions that helps to keep the teeth clean without causing them any damage.

Teeth grinding can add to micro-cracking in the teeth and can cause the biting edges to darken. This is usually caused by stress, so listening to relaxation sessions can actually help keep your teeth white!

You can also use tooth bleaching to whiten the enamel of your teeth. Dentists and tooth whitening kits use a form of hydrogen peroxide. However this is far safer than simply rinsing your mouth out with it yourself. The hydrogen peroxide in the whitening kits is buffered and there are devices in the kits, such as trays and strips, which minimise tissue exposure to the peroxide.
.
If you have really serious stains, then your dentist might suggest you apply a veneer. A Veneer is usually made of porcelain that is attached to the surface of your natural tooth with a type of durable cement. Veneers are custom-made to the desired shape and
colour of your tooth. The application is painless and the veneer itself should last around 7-10 years.

Bonding is also a process of applying a cover over a discoloured tooth surface. Here a dentist applies a tooth-coloured plastic resin to the tooth that is then bonded and sculpted to the proper shape.

There is also the process of lazer bleaching. A dentist uses a laser along side a whitening gel. The gel is applied to the teeth and a laser light is used to activate the crystals to absorb the energy from the light and penetrate the teeth enamel to increase the lightening effect on the teeth. This is one of the most expensive remedies, but is usually the quickest.

There are many ways to help you get a brighter whiter smile. Use your head and make sure you are not actually doing more harm than good. Look after your teeth in the traditional sense, with regular brushing and avoiding sweet, acidic foods, and staining foods. If you have more serious stains, then visit a dentist, or buy products from a reputable dealer. Be very careful when using the common household remedies, such as hydrogen peroxide, acids, baking soda and salt. They could cause you more harm than good in the long term.

Raw Milk - Health Benefits

by: devika

Most people are unaware that clean, raw milk from grass-fed cows was actually used as a medicine in the early part of the 20th century. Raw milk - straight from the cow - has been called the "stem cell" of foods. It was used as medicine to treat, and many times cure, some serious diseases. From the time of Hippocrates until just after World War II, this miracle liquid nourished and healed millions.

Proteins:
Raw cow's milk has all 20 of the standard amino acids, which saves our bodies the work of having to convert any into usable form. About 80% of the proteins in milk are caseins (reasonably heat stable but easy to digest). The other 20% fall into the class of whey proteins. These are also easy to digest, but also very heat sensitive.

The immunoglobulins are an extremely complex class of milk proteins also known as antibodies. These provide resistance to many viruses, bacteria and bacterial toxins and may also help reduce the severity of asthma symptoms. Research has shown a significant loss of these important disease fighters when milk is pasteurized.

Carbohydrates:
Lactose is the primary carbohydrate in cow's milk. It is made from one molecule each of the simple sugars glucose and galactose. People with lactose intolerance do not make the enzyme lactase and so cannot digest milk sugar. Raw milk has its lactose-digesting Lactobacilli bacteria intact. This may allow people who traditionally have avoided milk to drink raw milk.

Fats:
About two thirds of the fat in milk is saturated. Saturated fats play a number of important roles in our bodies. They construct cell membranes and key hormones, they provide energy storage and padding for delicate organs, and they serve as a vehicle for important fat-soluble vitamins.

Vitamins:
Whole raw milk has both water and fat soluble vitamins. No enriching is necessary. It's a complete food. Pasteurized milk must have the destroyed components added back in, especially the fat soluble vitamins A and D.

Minerals:
Raw milk contains a broad selection of minerals ranging from calcium and phosphorus to trace elements.

Calcium is abundant in raw milk. Its benefits include a reduction of some cancers, particularly colon; higher bone density in people of all ages; lower risk of osteoporosis in older adults; lowered risk of kidney stones; the formation of strong teeth; as well as a reduction of dental cavities.

Enzymes:
The 60 functional enzymes in raw milk have an amazing assortment of jobs to perform. Some of them are native to milk and some come from beneficial bacteria growing in raw milk.

Cholesterol:
Milk contains about 3mg of cholesterol per gram. Our bodies make most of the cholesterol we need. This amount fluctuates by what we get from our food. Cholesterol is a repair substance. It is a waxy plant steroid that our body uses as a form of water-proofing and as a building block for key hormones.

Beneficial Bacteria:
Raw milk is a living food with amazing self-protective properties. As most food goes bad as it ages, raw milk gets better. From helpful bacterial fermentation, the digestibility of enzymes, vitamins, and minerals all increases.

How To Whiten Your Teeth In A Safe As well As Healthy Way

Donald

Lots of people face problems with yellow or discolored teeth. There are various causes of discolored teeth such as lack of calcium, smoking, coffee etc. The discolored teeth always give an odd idea about one's personality. If you have discolored teeth, you may also want to get rid of it. Here are some effective as well as safe tips to whiten your teeth.
During recent years, the field of teeth whitening has changed immensely. Now many teeth whitening products are available on the market. Moreover, the dental technology also has been undergoing rapid change.
The safest and quickest way to whiten your teeth is to go to a dentist. Of course, it is not a secret that you should learn from me. But what is important to know is how the dentist plans to whiten your discolored teeth, and how much the teeth whitening will cost.
If you go to the dentist to whiten your teeth, your dentist will make molds of your teeth and send them off to a lab. Within a week your custom fitted teeth whitening mouthpiece would arrive. Now your dentist will apply the plastic teeth whitening molds that are filled with peroxide. After 3-4 visits, you would get quite reasonable white teeth. But the procedure is a bit costly. Whitening your teeth in this way could cost you about $1,000 dollars.
Another method the dentists commonly follow is Laser Bleaching. It is also very popular. It is even a quicker method to whiten your teeth. It mainly consists of the application of a concentrated peroxide gel onto your teeth. But like the former procedure it will also cost you about $1,000 dollars. So, is rather expensive.
But, as always, there are ways to whiten your teeth at home. There are at least three very effective ways to whiten your teeth at home. One of the most common types of home teeth whitening procedures is to use whitening strips. People prefer the teeth whitening strips, because they are easy to apply and very little preparation is necessary.
Another most affordable and most efficient teeth whitening way is to use the bleaching gels. But you should be very careful as to which gel to buy, as well as in the use of the gel. Most of the teeth whitening gels available are almost same. But here are some considerations:
Another thing about the gels, is that usually glycerin is used as a carrying agent for the active ingredients. Glycerin is harmless but when mixed with carbamide peroxide, it is used to draw water out of the enamel in order to speed up the whitening process. It can cause sensitive teeth. So, you should search for the teeth whitening product that does not use a glycerin base.
Another home recipe for whiter teeth is a paste consisting of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, table salt and a dab of toothpaste. You can also use this cheap, safe and effective method to keep your teeth white over time. But one negative is that it has a bad taste.
A recipe for a teeth whitening paste is :
You can make the paste by mixing the following ingredients:
3 Teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide
2 Teaspoons of baking soda
1/2 Teaspoons of table salt
Some toothpaste
Thus, you can have white teeth not only by undergoing clinical treatments, but also through some safe and cheap home recipes. You can follow the method that seems most suitable to you.
Don't try and get movie star white teeth, as that is normally achieved via crowns and veneers. Trying to bleach teeth to that high level of white, would likely to considerable damage to your teeth and gums.

How to maintain Dental health and hygiene

by: Praveen P

Teeth are the vital part of human body, which will be given priority when we suffer from dental aches. Instead of going to the verge of discomfort, educate yourself by proper oral hygiene. Most people brush their teeth for 'fresh breath' and white teeth, apart from that clean it gently to avoid the dental plaque and tartar from teeth diseases. Brushing your teeth is the most important activity, which can maintain your teeth healthy. The main objective in carrying out oral hygiene procedures is to remove bacterial plaque from the teeth. Poor oral hygiene leads to several harm disease too. Patients with Periodontitis or gum disease may face increased risk of cardiovascular problem and diabetes. Poor oral hygiene and periodontal disease may cause lung diseases such as pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).  Risk of osteopenia or osteoporosis. For good oral health we need to take care oneself in many areas: 1) Daily Dental Cleaning Routine 2) Balanced Diet, limit the snacks 3) Avoid tobacco contents. 4) Examine your mouth daily. Daily Dental Cleaning Routines are:  Brush at least twice a day.  Brush teeth front as well as back of it. Also away from the gums too. Learn to floss the teeth. Rinse the mouth properly after the food. Diet Food:  Always keep your mouth moist by using fluorides, (water, toothpaste, salt, milk).  Try to have nutritious food (vegetables and fresh fruits)  Free sugars and other fermentable carbohydrates, consumption will increase the prevalence of decaying of tooth.  Fruit juices are more erosive than whole fruits.  Try to avoid soft drinks. Oral hygiene is important in human life to generate confidence and quality of life. Daily dental cleaning routines and proper diet can reduce the flaws in teeth. Vydehi Institute of Dental Sciences and Research Centre has been providing education in oral health care science. How Gum Disease Affects Your Health

by: EmeryC

As we go through life, sooner or later we will experience some sort of health problem, whether it be through heredity or other factors. Some diseases will burst forth without warning; others can go on progressively without our knowledge.

Gum disease is one that fits in both categories. It starts out silent and before we know it, we have a mouthful of problems. Over 70 % of the population has gum disease issues. For the most part, gum disease is usually considered a localized disease. Not to worry, a trip to the dentist will fix everything. This is not always the case.

Gum disease or ( Periodontal Disease) as it is called is a common and greatly misunderstood disease which can effect the over all health of your body. As it progresses, the gum infection will spread through the blood stream effecting certain parts of the body.

Approximately, 95 % of Americans with Diabetes also have gum disease, due in part to an increased susceptibility to infections. Gum disease not only is a discomfort and risk factor for those with Diabetes, but also make Diabetes worse.

So - now we know that gum disease is an infection which can travel through our blood stream which can act as a catalyst to complicate any existing conditions. Going to the dentist twice a year is the best preventative maintenance we have in our arsenal. However, as with other health problems, gum disease can go into hiding for a long time even years before we start to experience it's effects.

Medical science is finding out more about this disease and it's relationship with other bodily diseases. This should by no means be taken lightly !

Gum disease and Heart Disease are strongly related. Researchers have found that people with gum disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from heart disease as those without gum disease - Surprised ?

The good news is that periodontal disease can be reversed through alternative means. There are many over the counter products that can help us with our dental issues.

The biggest question that I receive in my e-mails is asking , Can my gums grow back?

There are two factors involved:
(1) If there isn't a great amount of bone loss that supports the gums.
(2) If the gums live in a bacteria free environment, that is to say, eliminating the bacteria that lives within the gum pockets, then the gums will re-generate themselves and grow back. Alternative over the counter products will help speed the healing process.

Yes, we all want a nice smile but more so, we need our health. Bacteria is always constantly forming in our mouth waiting to make our lives unpleasant. In today's busy society, we may find it difficult to practice good dental hygiene, which is understandable. Using a good dental care product to eliminate the bacteria along with proper dental hygiene will assure your dental health for years to come.

Gum Disease - The Silent Enemy

Gum Disease - The Silent Enemy

by: EmeryC

Periodontal ( gum ) disease is a much over looked disease. This disease is seldom blamed for other health conditions. We now know that the bacterium that causes gum disease, travels through our blood stream and can invade various organs in our body making existing conditions worse. This doesn't occur over night but through time. Reflecting back with my own bout with gum disease , I had no idea what this disease was or what damage it causes.

My teeth were strong and my gums were healthy. Little did I know that the bacteria that causes this disease was working on my gum line and gradually working it's way into the gum pockets. Once there, the bacteria found a home to breed. Again, this didn't occur over night but it took several years for it to become noticeable.

What I failed to realize, was that gum disease is hereditary as it is along with other diseases. If Periodontal (gum) disease lurks somewhere in your family tree, chances are, you may have inherited this unwanted gift.

Periodontal disease can carry emotional scars as well as causing physical damage. It's difficult to hide a smile with a few missing teeth. Dental procedures can always in most cases restore your smile, however, they can be expensive. If gum disease becomes to far advanced, it almost certainly results in the loss of teeth.

For those of us who just can't afford the price of expensive dental procedures, alternative methods can be used to save the teeth that we have and restore our gums back to a healthy condition. Having dental check ups twice a year should be a priority. Treating gum disease in it's early stages is the best way to keep your smile.

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, about 80 percent of U.S. adults currently have some form of gum disease.

Periodontal (gum) disease not only affects our oral health, it also plays a significant part in the over all health of our body.

* Approximately 95 percent of Americans with Diabetes also have gum disease, due in part to an increased susceptibility to infections. Periodontal disease not only is a discomfort and risk factor for those with Diabetes, but may make Diabetes worse.

* Researchers have found that people with gum disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from heart disease as those without gum disease

* The American Academy of Periodontology states that pregnant women who have periodontal (gum) disease, may be seven times more likely to have a baby that is born to early and too small.

At this point, I would like to mention a condition that is not directly related to gum disease, however, at some point in the future, can be a contributing factor.

Bruxism - is when the teeth are constantly being clenched. This usually occurs with those that are under-going long term stress or anxiety. Constant clenching of the teeth can lead to wearing down of tooth enamel, tooth sensitivity and loose teeth, which in time will give gum disease an open field to play. It also can occur during the day or when one is sleeping. To alleviate this condition, purchase an over the counter mouth guard which will cushion the teeth. This usually works well.

When brushing your teeth, do not use a toothpaste that contains SLD ( sodium lauryl sulfate.) SLD is a foaming agent that is used in commercial and industrial cleaners. It's used in toothpastes to produce foam, which floats away food particles. It also is a big irritant to our gums.

Mouthwashes are great for eliminating bacteria that brushing cannot reach. However, do not use a mouthwash that contains alcohol. The reason being, is that alcohol will dry the saliva up leaving the mouth defenseless against bacteria causing germs which thrive in dry environment.

Gum disease can and will invade our body and it will continue to progress unless we treat and prevent it from happening.

Dental Health Care

by: Seth Miller

It is important that people give equal importance to dental health care and general health care, and stop treating the former just as a supplementary of the latter. Neglecting your teeth might lead to serious trouble for you in the future. Many people are afraid of going to the dentist, causing them to neglect their dental care. You should overcome this fear. Keep in mind, though, that there is hardly any substitute for regular personal care.

Ever since childhood, you must have heard your parents telling you to brush your teeth. The best way to do so is to ensure that your brush should be against the gums at 45 degree angle. You should proceed with gentle strokes, and brush each side and the top. Make it a point to brush your tongue too. Do not keep the same toothbrush for eternity; try to change it every six weeks or so.

Take proper care of your toothbrush. Remember that this is the object that enters your mouth daily, coming in contact with billions of bacteria. Never ever share your toothbrush with anyone, as it entails a huge risk of cross-contamination. Thoroughly rinse your toothbrush after use. If many toothbrushes are kept together, do not allow them to come in contact with one another. Opinions differ on the storage of toothbrushes in a disinfectant. Some opine that it is more harmful to store the toothbrush in the same disinfectant repeatedly, as it might result in cross-contamination.

Do not keep your toothbrush in a closed container that can turn out to be a favorite spot for bacteria to form. Your floss should be 16 to 18 inches in length. Wrap the floss around each of your middle fingers and slip it between your teeth. Form a U shape against the side of one tooth. Starting at the gum line, use a gentle rubbing motion to remove the particles of food. Repeat with each adjacent tooth. Remember to take up the slack so that you are using a clean section of floss for each tooth.

Dental Health

by: Damian Sofsian

Dental hygiene is very important if one wishes to have long-lasting and good-looking teeth. This should begin at a very young age even as the first tooth erupts at the age of about 3 months. Healthy teeth can be maintained by simple procedures such as brushing and flossing and visiting the dentist regularly.

Teeth must be brushed twice a day. Ideally, teeth must be brushed after every meal. If a long time passes between eating and brushing your teeth then food particles will remain embedded between the teeth. This enables bacteria to thrive and allows for decay to set in. A toothpaste containing fluoride is advised by most dentists. Fluoride strengthens the teeth and prevents them from decay. Toothbrushes with soft bristles are suitable for children, while adults must use tougher bristled toothbrushes. Teeth must also be flossed twice a day to remove the particles accumulated between the teeth.

It is necessary to visit the dentist on a regular basis. Different people have different dental problems. Hence, the frequency of visits must be discussed with the dentist. Dentists check your teeth for cavities, plaque formation, lesions on the jaws, and stains on the teeth. Plaque accumulation can be removed by the dentist. Such regular visits can also detect budding problems and that may drastically reduce the need for extensive operations such as root canals and crown fillings.

A good diet helps to maintain oral health. Foods having more sugar content must be avoided as these sugars facilitate the growth of bacteria on the teeth. If sugar-containing foods are eaten, teeth must be washed immediately, at least by gargling water in the mouth. Leafy foods such as spinach help in natural cleansing of the teeth. In fact, people in Asian countries like India use twigs of the neem tree to brush their teeth instead of toothpastes.

Smokers should take dental health more seriously. People who smoke frequently may be prone to conditions such as periodontitis, gingivitis, and even oral cancer. A routine dental checkup helps to catch such problems in their initial stages, and perhaps avert them completely.

A look at Tooth Whiteners

by: Ryan Fyfe

All we see on television in the movies is bright white smiles. With the release of several over the counter teeth whitening products over the past few years, it can be hard to know which one is going to give you the Hollywood smile that you dream about. Whitening Toothpastes Whitening toothpastes generally cost between $2-$10. Several studies have been done on these toothpastes to see if they really can whiten your teeth just while you brush. Studies have shown that you they can help a bit, and also that the same results can be achieved with normal toothpastes with a little extra brushing every day. The simple fact is that the toothpastes doesn’t sit on your teeth for long enough to actually bleach any discoloring that is present. Bleaching Trays Bleaching trays are usually obtained through a dentist. What happens is that the dentist will take an impression of your teeth, and make a mold. You will then have to wear that mold with bleaching solution in it for a certain amount of time each day. Experts all agree that this is the most effective method however the price is more than most people are willing to pay. Bleaching trays can cost between $300-$2000. If this is a method you are interesting in I would recommend talking to your dentist for more information. Over the Counter There are several brands of over the counter whiteners. The two largest ones that I am familiar with are Crest Whitestrips, and Colgate Night Effects. Both of these products work in a similar way although have completely different application. Crest Whitestrips are small plastic strips, that you rap around the upper and bottom sections of your teeth. The bleaching solution is on one side of the strip, and rests along your teeth while you wear the strips. You must wear the product twice a day for 30minutes for two weeks. Colgate Night Effects is a paste, that is “painted on your teeth before you go to bed, for 14 days as well. I have personally tested out both of these products and have found that most others agree that the Crest Whitestrips are the superior method. I noticed a much greater level of whitening after using the Whitestrips, and was much more impressed with the ease of application, and the time involved in using them. Whitestrips are simple to use, and can be used anywhere. I’ve popped them on at work, and no one will even notice that I’m wearing them. Crest Night Effects are a bit cheaper of a solution and if you don’t mind waking up with a chalky feeling in your mouth, they might be the product for you. Before trying out any bleaching solution I would recommend talking to your dentist, as he or she knows your teeth the best, and will be able to guide you in the right direction. -- Feel free to reprint this article as long as you keep the following caption and author biography in tact with all hyperlinks.

A Guide To Dental Health

by: Seth Miller

People begin to learn about dental health from a very young age, when teeth first begin to show up. But in spite of such early awareness, many people fail to maintain good dental health through their adult life. Good dental health comprises brushing and flossing your teeth every day, and regular visits to a dentist or dental hygienist as well. Besides, people supplement their dental care with the use of products like mouthwash or advanced mouth care systems. You should keep it in mind that the lack of adequate dental care practices will result in cavities and gum disease.

It is generally advised that you use a toothbrush with softer bristles so as to protect your gums. Some people, however, prefer power brush systems that help break up plaque and bacteria in your mouth. But it takes more than brushing to keep your teeth in good health. Some other steps need to be taken to ensure that people do not lose their teeth as they become old.

To begin with, you should understand your own oral health needs, as your oral health depends on your diet, the type and amount of saliva in your mouth, your overall health and your oral hygiene routine. Try to follow a daily routine in consultation with your dentist.

As fluoride strengthens developing teeth in kids and prevents decay in adults, toothpastes and mouthwashes containing fluoride should be used. You should brush at least twice a day, if possible three times or after every meal. You should also floss at least twice a day. Brushing and flossing will remove plaque, a complex mass of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth.

Limit the consumption of snacks and follow a balanced diet plan. Tobacco in any form will enhance the risk of oral cancer and cause stains on your teeth. Visit your dentist regularly and get your mouth examined.
