Vascular Headache: The Causes and the Treatments

Richard Romando

Vascular headache is the most common and frequent of all type of headaches that people suffer from these days.

How Does A Vascular Headache Occur?

The shortage of blood supply to the brain causes vascular headache. Migraine, for example, is one type of vascular headache. The short supply of blood to the brain may occur for different reasons like extreme cold temperatures, stress and dehydration etc.

What Are The Common Symptoms?

The usual symptoms of vascular headaches include throbbing of one or both temples, fatigue, nausea, sensitivity to sound and light, drowsiness and blurred vision. Vascular headaches can last for days if not treated with the proper medication and can grow increasingly worse; so the earlier realized and actioned is better to get faster relief.

Treating Vascular Headache

There are an umpteen number of drugs available in the drug stores for treating vascular headaches. Usually while going for these migraine drugs, people often neglect the need any prescription to purchase or administer, it is very important that you read the directions carefully and follow them precisely.
The general belief is that taking large amount of medicines would cure faster, but in the process they will cause damage to their stomach and digestion. When taking headache medications ensure that your stomach is full and you drink plenty of water, else the drugs may cause nausea. Effects such as vomiting and losing important body fluids are also quite common which further dehydrates the body and thus, make the headache worse.

Helpful Tips

Grab on the rest in a quiet dark place preferably cool for a couple of hours after the medication. This helps the body can relax and the medication can work without any interference.
If even after the maximum daily dose your headache persists, you should consult a doctor and he would best recommend the apt treatment suitable for you. It is extremely important you know the cause of your headaches and verify if it is due to certain existing medical condition and cannot be helped by taking more medications for it.

Mental Health Services

by: Peter Emerson

It is an established fact that almost two-thirds of all people afflicted with some kind of mental dysfunction do not seek treatment. This is confirmed by the WHO's Global Burden of Disease study.

The reasons for that people do not seek treatment vary, but some of the most common ones are a fear of the social stigma attached to mental disease; a fear of compromised security (loss of job, spouse, benefits entitlement, etc.); an inability to pay for treatment; or lack of awareness of the problem.

Thankfully, many forms of mental disease are no longer looked down upon; nor are those who suffer from them necessarily ostracized in society or at the workplace. Many progressive companies now offer more time to their employees for recovery from mental illness, and there is a decided increase in general social awareness prevalent today.

Considering its increased prevalence today, it is understandable that mental health has become a lucrative money-spinner. Psychiatrists and psychologists are amongst the highest-paid professionals in the modern world. This being so, there is a lot to be said for self-help groups like Schizophrenics Anonymous, Alcoholics Anonymous, and Narcotics Anonymous. These offer an amazingly effective therapeutic support systems for sufferers, free of cost.

There are various organizations that monitor and streamline mental health efforts on a national scale today. Among them are the Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the Federal Action Agenda for Mental Health. These organizations exist to ensure fair and helpful practices among mental health professionals and to upgrade the standards of mental health services as and when necessary.

Basically, professional mental health services offer treatment for either the whole gamut of mental disorders, or they specialize in them individually. The onus of treatment in present times is on the most prevalent: anxiety disorders such as obsessive-compulsive and post-traumatic-stress disorders; bipolar and manic-depressive disorders; schizophrenia; behavioral disorders, such a eating disorders; and ADHD/ADD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders).

Mental Health Clinics

by: Peter Emerson

Clients to mental health clinics are usually not admitted arbitrarily. The process usually consists of an initial interview with a community worker or a mental health professional. If a client is considered in need of residential or out-patient treatment at a mental health clinic, an extensive history of the mental illness will then be recorded. Such assessments will also include interviews with other doctors and family physicians who have noted the onset and progress of the ailment.

The staff at mental health clinics usually consists of psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health nurses, and support personnel who are specially trained. The scope and activities of mental health clinics in America generally falls under the purview of the CMHC (Community Mental Health Centers). This body issues licenses to clinics and centers for the practice of mental health-related treatment.

Considering that mental health crises do not always announce themselves in advance, a mental health clinic or center usually offers twenty-four-hour emergency services. These include inpatient hospital referral, since many cases are diagnosed in hospitals while the client is under treatment for other health problems.

Mental health problems affect people from all age groups, and American mental health clinics also offer services specifically for the aged as well as children and adolescents. The reasons that commonly lead to a referral for elderly persons range from senile dementia and Alzheimer's disease to problems related to chronic alcohol abuse. Mental health problems typical to the aged fall under the category of geropsychiatric medicine.

Teenagers and young adults often find themselves in need of mental health services because of substance abuse, inherited mental problems, and Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD).

The services available at mental health clinics necessarily include group therapy, individual and family counseling, and a social awareness cell. The latter would be staffed by personnel who could explain the various issued surrounding metal health in layman's terms to clients and their families. They are also an integral part of the evaluation process.

Mental Health and Nutrients

by: Mehjabeen Poonawala

Every one of us humans innate biomedical factors that influence health functions, since every person has a different combination of characteristics from either one of there parents or ancestors they adapt to different types of psychological behaviors and nutrient needs. Therefore some of us are genetically suited for vegetarian-based diets and others are not. Some get satisfied with nutritional needs by diet alone and others require nutrition supplements to overcome genetic aberration. When genetics differ from body to body in the process of food then we can ponder that some of us have an overload of nutrients than the others. Some of us have very low levels of such nutrients causing at most times the RDA ( Recommended Daily Allowance ) to achieve not on a physical but also a mental health unbalance. Its also very important to understand that excessive amount of such nutrients can also result to serious health problems- namely such nutrients include copper, iron, folic acid,, calcium and many forms of fatty acids, this naturally differs from person to person but the presence of multiple vitamins and minerals can be harmful for some and act normal for some. The medical communities agree on tremendous influence of neurotransmitters on behavior of disorder. People can have a predisposition for there problems due to genetically aberrant level of neurotransmitters. Our mental health is dependant upon having the proper amounts nutrient intake or presence to be comprehensive of no critical brain malfunction. The brain works like a factory producing serotonin , dopamine and various such chemicals everyday, the only relief for our brain is the proper intake of nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Improper amounts of nutrients can cause serious problems with our neurotransmitters. People with depression require basic amounts of vitamin B-6. This vitamin is the deplete nutrient we persist or have to synthesis our actual mental health trauma. There are other serotonin enhancing medications and other altering drugs but the true cause of mental difficulties so often remains uncorrected, therefore if a patient needs the support in basic mental conditions medical administrators improvise on vitamin B-6 with supporting nutrients to achieve simple health benefits of the body and mind. Hence nutrient therapy can be very potent chemistry that doesn't involve side effects, since no molecules foreign are needed for body support. This therapy may eventually eliminate the need for most psychiatric medication and observation. Nutrients play a critical role in mental health, they are the building blocks of the nervous system, correct testing and understand of deficiencies, and overloads can pinpoint the causes of many sever mental symptoms, thus opening the door to hope and recovery.

Mental Health

by: Peter Emerson

It would appear that at some point after World War I, real mental health became something of a luxury. The absence of any real mental disease like schizophrenia or dementia certainly is not an indicator of complete mental health any longer. The boom in knowledge of human psychology that began in the 1960s has made that eminently clear.

Truthfully speaking, even basic functionality can no longer be automatically assumed for a human being living in the present age. There are an unprecedented number of Americans and Europeans undertaking psychotherapy today what started off as a fad now seems to have become a necessity of daily living. The pressures of the rat race are overwhelming. The number of situations and triggers for mental disorders has multiplied significantly. The stress levels are extremely high.

We are, therefore, reduced to defining acceptable mental health in very broad terms. A certain degree of aberration is to be expected in almost every post-modern human being. Reasonable mental health will, therefore, have to be defined by the lack of gross disorders. A good standard for judging this would be the one apparently employed by health insurance companies, who are reluctant to pay for mental disorders that do not result in complete breakdown of normal life for the individual.

The diseases that indicate a major disruption in mental health would today include Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, or a major depressive disorder. Further mental disorders that may or may not be considered as mere a lack of fine tuning by authorities may include obsessive-compulsive disorders, alcohol or drug addiction, or stress-induced nervous breakdown.

Mental health in the twenty-first century means a reasonable quality of life and functionality in individuals, despite the overwhelming odds against them.

How to Exercise your Nervous System, Memory and Improving Intelligence

by: adrianna smith

The nervous system relies on a network of high-speed communications to alert the brain to information that affects all areas of the body.

For example, the impulses sent from the nervous system of the brain travel up to 250 miles per hour. This is infinitely faster than the endocrine system that sends hormones through the bloodstream and can take an hour to get to your destination.

The nervous system has full attention of the brain and the brain reacts. The answers may be the result of pain, joy or other sensory data.

You work your heart and muscles to improve their condition and tone. You want to have a low resting heart rate and slow deep breathing, all the time. Exercise helps everyone definitely. There is nothing better you can do to depression than regular exercise. But it is also very desirable to directly train the nervous system to function efficiently and effectively. Anyone can become healthier.

When I tell you to exercise your brain I do not mean soduku and crossword puzzles. For almost all, the stimulation is not the big issue. The problem is insufficient capacity for relaxing the nervous system. I do not mean the kind of relaxation you get after physical exhaustion or a few shots of tequila. I mean the formation of the relaxation response.

The methods I describe below are permanent benefits for a wide range of issues. Many involve biological monitoring and biofeedback. Biofeedback interactive media training with a view of their physiological responses. It's like an exercise with mirror inside body. The ability of a nerve to fire depends on the presence of electrolytes - minerals such as potassium, sodium, magnesium chloride and dissolved in water. They are called electrolytes to signify their role in the conduction of electricity in the human body. If you have very little sodium and potassium in your diet, the imbalance can slow down the ability to drive signals from neurons.

Coping with Sinus Headaches

Richard Romando

A sinus headache, if caused by the sinuses, is more of a face ache than a true headache. The sinus passages are located under many areas of skin on the face. An infection of the sinuses may cause them to swell and therefore become painful. The sinus infection may be followed by a headache and should be treated properly.

Allergies and Sinus Headaches

Allergies and sinus infections may have similar symptoms; however, the headache is treated separately. Allergies may appear with a headache, while the Sinus headaches will often cause a fever, as the body fights the infection that is causing the sinuses swollen.

The Sinus Headache Could be a Migraine

Much debated though it is believed that 90% of self diagnosed sinus headaches are actually migraines; the issue is a hot topic of discussion amongst professionals in the medical community. Some doctors believe that the patients may not have had migraines but a Sino-nasal disease. Sino-nasal disease is a chronic condition of inflamed nasal and sinus passages that can currently only be corrected by surgery.

To the believers of the migraine theory, there has been a significant improvement in patients who began migraine treatments after proper diagnosis. It is always advisable to go for proper diagnosis before funneling to a treatment.

The doctor who preformed the study had diagnosed 90% with migraines. The patients were also sent to three other doctors, an ENT and two general practitioners. Of each of these doctors, less than 10% of the same patients were diagnosed with migraines. The best idea, who suspects sinus infection, is to consult a doctor to aver any serious consequences.

Treating a Sinus Headache

The treatment for sinus headache would also treat the other associated symptoms effectively. Decongestants and antihistamines can bring relief stuffy noses, watery eyes, and sore throats. Additionally, getting plenty of fluids, clearing nasal passages frequently, and staying well rested can also help to alleviate the discomfort associated with a sinus headache. If the headache persists, consult a doctor.

Confusion over Sinus Headache Symptoms

Richard Romando

Many people report sinus headache symptoms to their doctors or may self diagnose for sinus symptoms when there is no sinus headache at all. The patient may be diagnosed for the sinus headache while the symptoms might be pointing to migraine headaches instead.

The Symptoms

Most symptoms of the sinus headache may be same as that of other headaches, pain in the head, and facial pain around the eyes, nose and the forehead. However the difference between the two is whether your sinus symptoms are from headache or from an infection. The sinus headache implies a sinus infection, whereas migraine means there's something going on outside of the sinuses causing the migraine.

Why Differentiate the Two?

The two headaches need an altogether different treatment. In order to cure the symptoms of a sinus headache, the infection must be taken care of, whereas curing a migraine headache involves regulating hormone levels or relieving tension. Sinus headache medications treat the infection while relieving some of the pain; migraine medications target hormones and other balances in your body.
Very few of those who have sinus headache symptoms actually suffer from the sinus headache. Most of them actually suffer from migraine headaches, yet still treat them with sinus headache medication, which doesn't work so well in most cases. It is utterly important before starting any treatment, to get a proper diagnosis so that you know exactly what you should be treating.

BDNF Prevents and Reverses Alzheimer's Disease

by: Byron J Richards

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego, have provided ground-breaking proof that a natural protein called BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) can prevent and treat Alzheimer's. The study was carried out in a variety of animal models including mice, rats, and monkeys.
The effects of BDNF were potent, said Mark Tuszynski, MD, PhD, lead researcher. When we administered BDNF to memory circuits in the brain, we directly stimulated their activity and prevented cell death from the underlying disease.
The researchers reported that In each case, when compared with control groups not treated with BDNF, the treated animals demonstrated significant improvement in the performance of a variety of learning and memory tests. Notably, the brains of the treated animals also exhibited restored BDNF gene expression, enhanced cell size, improved cell signaling, and activation of function in neurons that would otherwise have degenerated, compared to untreated animals. These benefits extended to the degenerating hippocampus where short-term memory is processed, one of the first regions of the brain to suffer damage in Alzheimer's disease.
As I recently reported in my article, Top 10 Health Breakthroughs of 2008, BDNF may well be the molecule of the year, as BDNF is key to keeping your nerve cells alive and stimulating the growth of new nerve cells. Since your nerve cells are important for regulating everything else, keeping them in top working condition not only means that your mind will stay sharp it means you are likely to live longer and healthier. This new study adds significantly to the power of BDNF because it was able to prevent and reverse Alzheimer's independent of the amyloid plaque tangles.
The great news is that BDNF levels can be naturally boosted. Aerobic exercise boosts BDNF. The most important nutrient that helps is pantethine, providing the needed basic compound (cysteamine) that nerve cells need in order to make BDNF. Nutrients that also help make BDNF or protect it from declining are acetyl-l-carnitine, fish oil, blueberries, and curcumin.
This gives a solid two-pronged natural approach to preserving your nerves. On the one hand, you can boost BDNF. On the other hand, other new research has shown that grape seed extracts will prevent amyloid plaque tangles from forming in the first place.
It is very important to understand that adverse changes within the brain that eventually result in disease are progressively happening during the aging process. Older adults with sharp memory and cognitive function have far less brain wear and tear than normal aging adults who are loosing function and heading in the direction of more serious cognitive decline and potential Alzheimer's. And now it is rather sad to report that Alzheimer's is beginning to happen to adults in their 40s, as individuals burn out their nerves at ever younger ages.
BDNF is the closet thing to the fountain of youth yet discovered.

3 Ways You Can Avoid Alzheimer's

by: Janette Blackwell

Our newspapers keep describing new ways to avoid Alzheimer's , but I think these ways to prevent Alzheimer's often fly right over our heads. Why? Because they're what our mothers told us to do all along.

What did your mother say?

1. Eat Your Vegetables.

2. Go Outside And Play.

3. Study Hard.

AVOID ALZHEIMER'S BY EATING YOUR VEGETABLES

Eating (or drinking) our vegetables is a prime way to avoid Alzheimer's. In fact, a 2006 study by researchers from Vanderbilt University showed that subjects who drank three or more servings of fruit and vegetable juice per week had a 76 PERCENT LOWER RISK OF THE DISEASE! It seems our mothers were on the right track, and we may be able to prevent Alzheimer's by eating, or drinking, our vegetables.

AVOID ALZHEIMERS BY EXERCISING

Exercising outside, or exercising inside for that matter, also helps us avoid Alzheimers. Researchers from the University of Illinois found that those who exercised for at least 15 to 30 minutes at a time, three times per week, were more likely to avoid dementia or Alzheimers later on. And the Honolulu-Asia Aging Study found that MEN WHO WALKED TWO MILES PER DAY HAD HALF THE RISK OF DEMENTIA compared to those who walked less than a quarter mile per day, according to the report published in the September 22, 2004, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

AVOID ALZHEIMER'S BY LEARNING NEW THINGS

People who learned memory and reasoning strategies not only improved their mental alertness and increased their reasoning abilities, but they still enjoyed improved abilities five years later, according to a research report published in the December 20, 2006, Journal of the American Medical Association.

In other research, brain games, or brain training, were found to re-ignite key areas of the brain, offsetting some age-related declines and boosting performance.

My grandfather used to say, You can't teach an old dog new tricks. Grandpa was wrong. Older people can learn new tricks, and they will benefit greatly from doing so.

Locating quality research on ways we can avoid Alzheimer's has become a hobby of mine, says author Janette Blackwell. Find more valuable information on Alzheimer's prevention on her blog, You Can Avoid Alzheimer's, at http://youcanavoidalzheimers.blogspot.com/

Strokes And Dementia

by: Christian Goodman

Dementia can create a mental picture that it means to talk about the ones suffering from the Alzheimer's disease who find it very difficult to remember things and their close relationships and thereby causing character collapse leading to an outburst of fury and irritations. Reasons that cause Dementia are both curable and permanent and depending upon this the disease can be treated.

The major cause of Dementia is the failure of the cerebral cortex which functions in taking care of the thinking abilities, remembering and character. Once the cells corresponding to the brain in the cerebral cortex deteriorate it can be found that the perception and reasoning will diminish in people who face this illness. They will feel it difficult to manage and align simple things like routine management and cooking .

One out of the causes of Dementia is Alzheimer's disease and maybe a very annoying problem nowadays.Vascular Dementia is also supposed to the very main reason in this deteriorating problem. A group of simple strokes making the brain malfunction is called Vascular Dementia. When one happens to face these two conditions at the same time and these can worsen the start of Alzheimer's Disease.

Strokes can be characterized by blocking of blood to the brain. It can be a result of the bulging of the arterial walls or stone formation in the walls of the artery leading to the brain. Oxygen is supplied through blood to the brain and when stopped for a period of time the cells deteriorate. simple strokes erase memories and thereby make making senses of time, direction, and recognition difficult to distinguish.

Irritation may be the result of Failure in achieving targets of daily schedule and memory loss. Character transformation is very important in case of lowering the occurrences of strokes while major reasons cannot be avoided. Streamlining the Food habits and following a routine of physical activities are the key reasons to enhance the flow of blood and reducing the blood pressure. Stone Formation in walls of the artery are due to the bad cholesterol also termed as LDL.

Dementia is unbearable and its always safe to prevent it by following a healthy routine of Exercise and diet. This can lower the occurrences of strokes to a great extent and Dementia too. When our dear ones are affected by strokes its difficult to digest though simple or complex.

Know more on preventing dementia naturally by trying the natural dementia treatment program.Naturally treating Dementia is widely chosen rather than the importance induced on the other medications.
